The Messy Middle: Why More Decisions Deserve Consumer Input

The largest decisions get research programmes with the attention and rigour they deserve. The decisions made around them – smaller, faster, no less consequential – often move ahead without a consumer voice in the room. That’s the messy middle: the space between in-depth consumer insight and no research at all.

The Decisions Between the Big Decisions

Every organisation has a process for the moments that feel important: the annual strategy review, a major innovation programme, a new brand platform or a significant launch. When the stakes are obvious, businesses are generally good at making room for research.

Insight teams are used to being asked to support more decisions than they can realistically research. AI has added a further layer of complexity. Teams are now deciding not only where to focus effort, but also when a simple AI read is sufficient, when consumer input is crucial to inform the decision, and where the decisions need to move quickly before options become fixed by default.

Part of that pressure comes from the sheer volume of decisions that sit around those larger moments. Questions emerge as ideas take shape, routes are refined and investment decisions get closer.

It might start with deciding which proposition deserves further investment. Or when assessing which route should move into creative development, which claim is strongest, which audience offers the greatest opportunity, or whether a concern raised internally is something customers would notice at all.

Few of these decisions can command a dedicated, in-depth study in their own right. Some will be picked up within wider programmes, while others fall into the gaps. Collectively, though, they have a huge influence on what eventually reaches the market, often while consumer input could still change the direction.

This is the messy middle: important decisions moving at a pace and scale that do not always fit a conventional research programme, but a confident decision needs more than a simple AI read.

Why Consumer Input Gets Squeezed Out

Insight teams are not choosing to leave consumers out. The reasons are usually practical. Deadlines tighten, budgets are already committed and questions emerge midway through a project that nobody anticipated at the start. A dedicated project around every decision is rarely practical. Each new piece of research brings additional time, cost and coordination, even when a consumer perspective would improve the outcome.

The decision can then hinge on the best evidence available: previous research, market knowledge, stakeholder judgement, sales feedback and experience. All have value. The challenge comes when decisions move beyond the boundaries of the evidence available.
Years of working alongside insight and brand teams have shown us just how much of the eventual outcome is shaped in these in-between moments.

A Proportionate Way to Bring Consumers In

The value of consumer input is clear, but the question is how to bring meaningful human input quickly and cost-effectively when many questions sit in an awkward space. Too focused a question for a deep qualitative or quantitative programme. Yet still needing more nuance than an AI-only response can provide.

AI in qual brought real speed to research. The harder problem was making sure that speed came with an answer worth trusting. And it brought real concerns because, left alone, AI can flatten nuance, miss outliers, and misjudge tone or cultural reference. It rarely flags its own blind spots either, so a quick AI summary can sound convincing even when it’s wrong, which creates obvious risk when important decisions are being made.

QualifyAI and QualifyAI+ extend Firefish’s deep qual and quant expertise to give teams a practical way to hear from consumers more often: before committing investment, before killing ideas, before signing off creative, before launching a proposition, before choosing a direction. It’s AI-enabled so it’s fast enough to fit a decision already in motion, with Firefish researchers steering the process so the output holds up under real scrutiny.

Faster research is part of it. But better-timed consumer insight is the real gain, giving teams more clarity, confidence and credibility in every decision. That’s Firefish expertise, at exactly the right moment.
QualifyAI was built to give teams another option. Over time, we’ve found three core requirements come up again and again in these conversations:

Speed when the decision can’t wait.
Scale when the answer needs a broader view.
Agile comparison when the business needs to choose.

That tends to be where QualifyAI is most useful: helping teams move faster, bring consumers into more decisions and make more confident choices about where to focus.

Our experienced human strategists lead and guide the work, the technology helps us get there in a more agile and cost-effective way. The Firefish team designs the approach and sample with you, and shapes the stimulus. AI moderates the fieldwork and provides the first pass synthesis of the analysis. Firefish consultants interrogate the findings, looking for the human truths, tensions and nuances and give an informed view on what decision you should take as a business.

With our QAI text-based interviews well established for delivering confident decisions for our clients in a matter of days, we have recently expanded the offer with QAI+, giving us another way to support decisions where audience understanding depends on seeing / hearing more context, emotion and personal experience. Through longer, AI-moderated video interviews, QAI+ creates more room for reflection, context and explanation while still working at a pace that suits modern teams (brief to delivery in 1-2 weeks).

More Decisions Deserve Consumer Input

Insight leaders now have more opportunities to bring the customer voice into decisions that often fall outside bigger, dedicated programmes of research.

The messy middle contains plenty of moments where consumer input can help teams focus effort, invest more effectively and identify which opportunities deserve further investigation.

Research will continue to play a central role in the biggest decisions. QualifyAI allows consumer input to shape more of the choices that determine their eventual outcome.

Speed when the decision can’t wait.
Scale when the answer needs a broader view.
Agile comparison when the business needs to choose.
